Photo compliance

What we check before your application is submitted

A rejected photograph means starting again and waiting weeks.

Automated photo compliance check

A non-compliant photograph is one of the most common reasons HM Passport Office rejects an application. Before submission, your photo is checked automatically against 32 separate criteria drawn from HMPO photo specifications.

File and framing
Resolution, aspect ratio, file integrity, head size within the frame, shoulder crop.
Face and expression
Eyes open, neutral expression, mouth closed, head position measured on three axes (yaw, pitch, roll), image sharpness, exposure, obstruction of the face.
Background and objects
Background uniformity, background objects, sunglasses, headwear, masks, scarves, headphones, hair covering the eyes.
Lighting
Left-right facial luminance is measured and compared. Uneven lighting is reported with the affected side named.

Every check returns a specific reason, not a generic pass or fail. If your photo is rejected, you are told exactly what to change.

Religious head coverings are recognised and permitted, in line with HMPO rules.

Consistent and fair by design

Scoring is calculated server-side by fixed formula, never by a language model. The same photograph always returns the same verdict.

The system does not flag beards, freckles, moles, scars, tattoos, hair colour or length, earrings or makeup. Shadow detection is handled by direct luminance measurement rather than by a model, because model-based shadow detection performs unreliably on darker skin tones.
